Why do Power Windows Fail?

Why Power Windows Fail does not have a straight forward answer.  It depends on where you live and the manufacturer of your vehicle.  Honda vehicles fail in different areas than Nissans. Range Rovers fail in different areas than General Motor vehicles.  The Power Window Doctors™ specialize in Power Window Regulator, Motor and Switch Repair. Since we do 1000’s of repairs each month, we see most vehicles.

Power Windows are a standard feature on Most Modern Vehicles.  Manual Windows (those older crank type) are an Option.  Granted the Nissan and some Toyota’s are available with Manual Windows, but that’s not the norm.

A lot of websites claim power windows fail because of “cheap plastic parts” or, “they’re designed to fail”. Here at The Power Window Doctors™  we look at all aspects for “why power windows fail” and we don’t play the blame game.

Plastic originally meant “pliable and easily shaped”. It’s now used to describe a whole range of polymers. Polymer meaning “of many parts” and are made of long chains of molecules.

Modern Power Windows are designed to be lightweight. This saves a few ounces to, in some cases, pounds for vehicle weight.  When manufactures take into account all the areas they can save on weight, it results in lower cost to purchase and operate.

4 reasons Why Power Windows Fail.

Reason 1: “Oxo-degradable” Plasticspower windows

These are the kinds of plastics that eventually breakdown into smaller particles. The formulation of the Plastic has changed in the last 25 years and it will determine the Structurally Safe Life of that particular part/product. This is why Child Car Seats and Tires have an “expiration date”.  The Structurally Safe Life of Tires and Car Seats is 6 years.  As conscious consumers we don’t want plastics to last forever in the landfills.

The Power Window Doctors™  have addressed this issue.

Modern Power Windows have several plastic parts.  If they were made entirely of metal, they would weigh more. Are they “designed to fail”? Not necessarily, everything eventually breaks, power windows are no exception. The Power Window Doctors™ have specific reinforcing techniques that mitigate future breakage due to plastics “expiring”.  No other Shop or Dealer takes the time to do this.

Reason 2: Manufacturing defects

During the manufacturing process weak spots are possible.  Spot Welds fail, cables pull out of the cable stop and places with stress eventually bend.

Reason 3: Environmental

Depending upon where you live, will affect why your power window fails.

Hot Dry Climates: The heat affects the plastic parts significantly.  The hotter it is, the hotter it is inside your door.  This softens the plastic parts as well as any fused cable stops.  Since Power Windows are 90% in the UP position, they’re MOSTLY in 100% Tension. Heating and Cooling eventually leads to breakage.  Power Window Motors are also affected by heat. Every power window motor has a safety built in to keep from overheating. Environmental heat has a similar effect.

Humid Climates: Higher Humidity causes its own set of issues.  Condensation can collect in the Motors as well as at the bottom of the window regulator. We’ve seen the motors rust on the inside and cables snap due to rust.

Ice & Snow: Freezing temperatures cause the rubber around the windows to harden, therefore the window doesn’t freely go Up and Down.  This puts a strain on the window regulator &  glass carriers causing breakage. In these areas it’s very possible you’ll need to replace the Regulator AND Glass (Because the Window Sash that holds the glass to the Regulator Snaps).

Reason 4: They just wear out.

After awhile parts just wear out or burn out.  It’s the natural life of Automotive Parts.

  1. Pay $300 to $800 or more at the Dealership or Auto Repair shop.  Spend your time waiting in the reception area or doing without your vehicle for a couple of days.  You may have to face this problem again in the near future because the new window regulator will fail again.
  2. Buy your own power window regulator and install it yourself.  This will also fail again and you’ll have the same hassle of putting it in. You also take the risk of breaking something while taking off the door panel and releasing the glass.
